Hunting Camp

One of the things I love to do is to set out with my husband and the horses trying to find the elk. One memorable trip we took had us listening and looking all night. We arrived at our camp spot, set up, and started eating dinner when the woods and mountains cut loose with elk calling each other. They kept at it all night and stopped in the early morning just before dawn. It was as if they knew we were up and getting dressed to come and find them, to follow their calls. Some of the elk had been so close when they cut loose bellowing I could swear they were right behind our tent. But as we set out to go take a look they disappeared as fast as the sun sets after it hits the horizon. We never got a glimpse of the magnificent animals but we were treated to the serenade of a lifetime.

  1. Every time I go camping, I'm convinced something's going to eat us and we end up sleeping in the car. I think, I would have had a heart attack if I heard an Elk-I don't even know what that sounds like.

  2. I like the imagery you use, I can hear the elk. We see them in our neighborhood all the time up here North of Sandpoint. It is a real treat. I wish I liked game meat, it is so much better for you, but my body can't handle it, although the only thing I have ever hunted for is wild mushrooms and huckleberries!

  3. Wonderful description of sleeping in the wild. I love the fact that in Idaho we have somehow learned to live alongside elk, deer, moose, bear, bobcat....

  4. That would be pretty exciting to have elk calls going on right behind your tent. I have never gone big game hunting before but my dad and brother do every year and always have good stories to tell. I love being out in the wild and camping so I can appreciate that much of it. It is to bad you didn't get to see the elk.

  5. Jen,
I love to hunt for mushrooms too, it is coming up soon. Huckleberries and blackberries are my other favorites. I have a pretty good size patch of blackberries right by my house so my freezer is usually full of those for smoothies in the morning.
